The beaches on Mallorca

Ever since the 1950s, Scandinavians have been travelling to Mallorca in search of the good life – and they continue to find it among the broad beaches and “hidden” inlets. The range of beaches on Mallorca is just as varied as the dramatic countryside!

Mallorca has hundreds of large and small beaches, from the expansive Playa de Palma close to the island capital, to small, gravelly beaches that you can only access on foot, and where there is just enough space to spread out your beach towel. And if you want to take a break from sun and sand, why not visit some of the enormous underground grottos? Mallorca really does have something for everyone, irrespective of whether you want to spend your time in the heart of the action, or are simply looking for a morning of peace and quiet.

One of Mallorca's main advantages from the perspective of beaches is, of course, the fact that it is an island. If the wind is blowing from the north, you can often enjoy more peaceful conditions on the south side, and vice versa. The special countryside on the north side of the island, with its mountains and steep cliffs, means that you need to be a little more careful when swimming there. The waves and currents generated in the large inlets can be very strong indeed.

You can reach many of the beaches on the island by car, but it is also a good idea to catch one of the many ferries that take beach-hungry visitors to fantastic little inlets with clear water and fine restaurants – which are just waiting for you to drop by ...

Some of the beaches on Mallorca:

Playa de Palma
An extensive beach with fine sand and shallow water. Many residents come here to swim on the weekends. Ideal for families with children.

Magaluf
The place that has become a classic for a great many charter tourists. Outside the city is a broad sandy beach that can be liberally sprinkled with shells.

Alcudia
A long, broad beach with fine white sand and clear water. Ideal for children.

Puerto de Sóller
A fishing town on the north side of the island that you can easily reach by car or on the train that runs straight through the mountain. Down in the charming marina there is a small but very popular beach.

Santa Ponsa
Attractions include a long sandy beach and numerous golf courses nearby.

Illetas
A slightly more exclusive holiday destination with two inlets that are ideal for swimming.

Cala Tuent
One of the smaller and more peaceful beaches on the north side of the island.

Cala d'Or
One of the more exclusive communities on Mallorca, where you can bathe in turquoise water in several inlets.
